Your Inner Expert at College
October 24, 2008 by Mark T. Rafter
I did a free program for a local community college the other day. It was the “general” talk that I give on Why Choose a Major, Choose a Life with some modifications I am seeing a need for based on the chaos in the economy.
My platform to date has been:
- Understand the Rules
- Understand Yourself
- Understand what you want
- Understand what to do - apply Your Inner Expert to owning your own business or investing
At the end of the day, it’s about creating value and building wealth. That is where the business owner and investor part comes in as a part of the applications noted in Number 4. However, with the recession we are now in (tell me this is not news to you … please!), I have added a couple of elements to the program (I pretty much did it in real time during my presentation the other day … kinda scary).
- Apply Your Inner Expert to getting a job
- Apply Your Inner Expert to keeping a job
Entrepreneurial behavior is great and to be encouraged in literally all aspects of your life. HOWEVER, when things are weird, it may pay - literally - to be working for someone else and working on keeping that job.
I am going to add this to the new book (yes, you heard it here first folks, I am working on book number 2) as I think college audiences need to understand how Items 1-3 are still quite relevant to creating a high quality of life. I need to understand that not everyone will go the your own business/investor route and getting and keeping a job are likely higher on their immediate list when times are tough.
