Quality of Life According to Mark - Part 1
January 30, 2009 by Mark T. Rafter
Since this blog is (often) about Quality of Life, how to get there, how to stay there and how to pay for it, I figure a blog or two about that specific subject would be worthwhile.
I look at Quality of Life as fulfillment (satisfaction, contentment, being at one with … whatever you want to call it) in all the dimensions of who you are. If that sounds like the usual self-help blathering woo woo talk, let me be more concrete:
- If you exercise regularly and dont eat like you’re some kind of an idiot that hasn’t read anything about what’s in a good diet in the last 20 years (eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables and avoiding excessive sugar, alcohol, fast food, saturated fats etc. ), you have quality in the physical dimension/aspect of your life. You have physical health/well being/wealth.
- If you are able to turn off the chattering voice in your head where your ego allows you get offended and take personally what people say about you, causes you to feel inferior, insignificant, etc., you have quality in the personal dimension/aspect of your life. You have personal/well being/wealth.
- If what you “do” for work is rewarding (uses your talents, skills, capacities, provides an honorable service or product) and are not a complaining troll that believes you should get something for nothing (UAW Jobs Bank Slackers and subsidy “Not” Farmers take note), you have quality in the vocational dimension/aspect of your life. You have vocational/well being/wealth.
Get the idea? You can make the same sort of snapshot for all the areas of your life where you find value (this is the whole list that I use, including repetition of some of the above):
- Vocational - Business / career
- Personal - Mental / emotional growth
- Relational - Relationships
- Financial – Income and Money
- Charitable - Service / philanthropy
- Physical - Health / fitness
- Recreational - Fun / pleasure
- Spiritual - Spirituality / religion
In any event, I’m going to keep running with this as I have a lot to say but don’t currently like writing lengthy blog posts so I will leave at this for now.
Get over yourself - be happy.
The Quality of Life Blog

One items that I just became aware of is the something a senior leader once relayed to me … “sometimes you may not know what affect you will have on people.”
Ok, so I like your posts and you have lots of good ideas. The post today for example, you intended to share wisdom on the 3 main points. Nice.
What affected me most was the list of domains under the bullet points. It’s a really good list to check in every day. There is always a few items that just aren’t getting my attention. OK, more than a few.
This is a good list to go back to the “Manifesto” and work some personal plans to ensure all these items are looked at and development goals in place.
You never know what affect you have on people.
